Combiner boxes are used to take multiple strings of solar panels and combine their output into two wires. Doing this adds all of the amperage from each string together while keeping the string voltage the same. Ex. If you combine 3 strings that have 100 volts each and 8 amps each, the combined output will be 100 volts and 24 amps. This is known as putting the strings in parallel. While mainly used in off-grid applications to put several shorter PV strings at lower voltages into your charge controller, it is not uncommon to pre-combine strings in a grid-tied system. This also allows you to use the combiner box as a wire transition box to change from the PV wire to a more affordable and easier to pull wire such as THHN or THWN. Off-grid installations will require a DC rated breaker for each string and grid-tied installations will require DC rated fuses for each string.
